The Government of Australia established the International Force East Timor (INTERFET) to provide security and maintain law and order throughout the territory of East Timor, and to establish an effective administration of civil and social service and to support capacity-building for self-government.

Eligibility and Criteria
Awarded for 30 days cumulative service in the area of operations between the 15 September 1999 to 10 April 2000.
The area of operations includes:

  • East Timor;
  • The sea adjacent to East Timor to a distance of 12 nautical miles; and
  • The CF staging base at Darwin, Australia.

Staff visits do not count as qualifying service.

Members serving with United Nations Assistance Mission East Timor (UNAMET) do not qualify for this medal.
