The Commander-in-Chief (CinC) Unit Commendation may be awarded to any unit or sub-unit of the Canadian Forces (CF), or to any similar organization of a foreign armed force working with or in conjunction with the CF, that has performed an extraordinary deed or activity of a rare high standard in extremely hazardous circumstances.

ELIGIBILITY & CRITERIA

CinC Unit Commendations are restricted to war or war-like conditions in an active theatre of operations. Service that is considered beyond the demands of normal duty that does not qualify for a CinC Unit Commendation may be considered for the CF Unit Commendation.

DESCRIPTION

The Commendation includes three elements:

• a framed, gold-embossed scroll, inscribed with the name of the formation, unit or sub-unit concerned and an appropriate citation and bearing the signature of the Commander-in-Chief;
• an insignia (displayed above) in the form of a gold bar with the Vice-Regal lion in full colour; and
• a pennant showing the Vice-Regal lion in full colour superimposed on a field (background) consisting of three vertical and equal stripes of navy blue, red and light blue. The pennant is a permanent symbol of the award and may be flown or openly displayed by recipient units as a public distinction.

WEARING

The insignia is worn on the uniform in accordance with A-AD-265-000/AG-001, CF Dress Instructions. The insignia will be worn for life by members of the unit or persons attached to the unit, on duty and directly involved in the action for which the Commander-in-Chief Unit Commendation has been awarded. Individuals posted to the unit after the award of the Commendation may only wear the insignia during their affectation with the honoured unit.

HISTORICAL NOTES

To date the Commander-in-Chief Unit Commendation has been presented to three CF Units:

The first was to the 1st Battalion of the Royal 22e Regiment Battle Group (Including N Company, 3rd Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment) for having opened the airport in the besieged city of Sarajevo in July 1992 (OP HARMONY). The Commendation was officially presented to the unit by Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., Governor General of Canada and Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Forces during a ceremony which took place at the Citadel in Quebec City on 9 September 2002.

The second was to the 2nd Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Battle Group for courageous and professional execution of duty during the Medak Pocket Operation in The Former Yugoslavia in September 1993 (OP HARMONY). The Commendation was officially presented to the unit by Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., Governor General of Canada and Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Forces during a ceremony which took place at the Winnipeg Arena in Winnipeg, Manitoba on 1 December 2002.

The third was to the 3rd Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Battle Group for professional and distinguished service in OPERATION APOLLO in Afghanistan in 2002. The Commendation was officially presented to the unit by General Raymond R. Henault, C.M.M., C.D., Chief of the Defence Staff on behalf of Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., Governor General of Canada and Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Forces during a ceremony which took place at the University of Alberta's Fitness Facility (Butterdome) in Edmonton on 8 December 2003.
